Mailchimp is sunsetting its Classic Automation Builder on June 1, 2025 — and if you haven’t upgraded to the Customer Journey Builder, your automated emails will stop sending. That includes welcome emails, abandoned cart reminders, follow-ups, and more.
So, how do you know if your account is still running on Classic automations?
Let’s walk through how to find out — and what to do if you are.
Step 1: Go to the Automations Tab
Start by logging into your Mailchimp account and clicking on Automations in the left-hand menu.

From here, you’ll see a list of all automations associated with your account.

Step 2: Look for the “Classic Automation” Tab
Mailchimp now clearly shows the older workflows as “Classic” in your automation dashboard. These are all built using the soon-to-be-retired Classic Automation Builder.

Step 3: Check the Automation Details
Click into any automation that looks suspiciously old. If you see a linear, step-by-step layout with basic triggers and limited conditions, that’s another sign you’re in the Classic Builder.

In contrast, the Customer Journey Builder uses a visual map with branching paths, delay rules, if/then logic, and multiple starting points.

Step 4: Check Your Plan Level
Mailchimp’s Customer Journey Builder is only available on Essentials, Standard, and Premium plans. If you’re still on the free plan, you won’t have access to it, and all your automations are likely Classic.
What to Do If You’re Using Classic Automations
If your automations are labeled “Classic,” you’ll need to:
- Rebuild your workflows using the Customer Journey Builder
- Recreate triggers and actions in the new format
- Test thoroughly to ensure nothing breaks when the switch happens
This isn’t just a forced change — it’s an opportunity to optimize your entire email marketing system with smarter segmentation, branching logic, and better timing.
